We are the ones with Malayali hearts in Brunei

The Malayalees in Brunei used to have small gatherings to foster the relationship and enliven the Malayali way of living. Being a small community in Brunei, Malayalees used to celebrate the festival of Onam and other cultural celebrations under the banner of Indian Associations in grandeur and it was an occasion for the Malayalees in Brunei to meet and greet. As the saying goes, wherever Malayalees go they form an association and establish a “kochu keralam”. It was not anything different for the Malayalees in Brunei too. To form an association for Malayalees was a long pending dream for Brunei Malayalees. In order to fulfill that dream, during the year of 2012 a Committee was formed to proceed with the formation of the association and all the completion of the registration formalities with the Brunei government. Mr. Venugopalan Nair, Mr. Mohan Varghese and Mr. Ramachandran were appointed as the advisors to the Committee. The following were the young enthusiastic Committee Members who ran an extra mile to fulfill the dream of a Malayali Association in Brunei.

The Brunei Government approval for the Malayali Association was officially received on July 11, 2013 from the Registrar of Societies. Thereafter the Malayali Association was enlisted with the Indian High Commission of Negara Brunei Darussalam.

The first Annual General Meeting of the Malayali Association was held on Friday August 23, 2013 chaired by the Malayali Association President Mr. Cyril Joseph with the following agenda, Briefing on the meeting notes with Registrar of Societies, Malayali Association’s Plan for the coming years, Financial report, Approval of new members, Election of New Management Committee and AOB. During the AGM, all the items in the agenda were discussed and closed. A new Committee was formed with Mr. Ajayan P Vasu as the new President.

The official inauguration of the Association was done on 08th March 2014 by the High Commissioner of India to Negara Brunei Darussalam, Dr. Ashok Kumar Amrohi in the presence Kuala Belait District Officer. Thereafter the Association continued to play a significant role in the lives of Malayalees as well as the local population in Brunei.

The Membership of the Association is offered to any person who is a Malayali or of Kerala origin provided the membership application is approved by the incumbent Malayali Association Committee. There are two types of membership available, family and Single Membership.

Currently there are over 200 active members in the Association.

OUR ESTABLISHED OBJECTIVES

A group of young enthusiastic Malayali friends in Negara Brunei Darussalam who still carry the nostalgic feelings of “Malayalanadu” in their heart and mind gathered together and fulfilled the long outstanding cherished dream of forming a Malayali Association in Brunei during the year of 2013.
